for example, Deus Ex has an excellent mod, Revision, but they broke the Ai as it relates to being stealthy (i.e., you can’t really stealth as well in that game, anymore). in newer HL builds, it might be the case that the Ai was “refined” by coders that didn’t understand this HL was unusual because some enemies were coding to behave as if they hunted by smell/taste, rather than sight and hearing (prior to HL, enemies would trigger on line-of-sight) modern games do not have true Ai it is an approximation
and you cannot crisscross game builds, such as modern HL with old TF because they underlying game code wouldn’t be compatible (i.e., it’s not worthwhile to invest coding time in that area because users aren’t expected to be doing that). vice-versa, modern build versions won’t be explicitly tested on old hardware, old Windows and game build versions are important because an older build could only be tested with older hardware and older Windows the underlying hardware is important avalable graphical functions will vary according to whether the hardware was manufactured in late 1990s, versus 2000s, versus current day What am I doing wrong?įor this issue, and the other issues you’ve described, there’s fundamental causes that you need to understand. And then the installation crashes every single time.
So I put in my Team Fortress Classic install disc. I can run Vanilla Half-Life on Windows 10, but whenever I try to install the expansions, I'm told I have to install Team Fortress Classic first. Originally posted by Shard FloofFox:yea, i can for a fact agree with Cambraker, and say that the original game worls on windows 10, as i own it along with its expansions on disc. So, if you want the BEST experience with the original Half-Life, I'd suggest getting Windows XP as a Virtual PC, and a CD-ROM copy of the game. But let me tell you, the same happened to Half-Life, just not as bad. The game has been patched to the point in which it just doesn't work nearly the same as it did back in '98 when it was originally released! I mean, people complain about how butchered Half-Life Source got with the SteamPipe update. The GAME changed, because it had been updated so many times over the past 22 years. You didn't cross over into some alternate universe where the AI sucks. I just wanted to write this to let you guys know that you're not experiencing the Mandella Effect or anything. I remember hearing people saying that the AI of Half-Life blew them away back in the day, but when they play it now, it isn't as impressive.
I don't know how to describe it exactly, and I can't exactly use video capture on my Windows XP computer to show you proof of what I mean since I don't have any internet connection on my XP computer (I'm typing this on a Windows 10 laptop). And even though I don't have a Windows 98 computer, but instead a Windows XP computer (don't worry, I also have different computer with a modern operating system), I have to admit the game's AI is a hell of a lot better on CD-ROM then it is on Steam.
I have a few older computers, and CD-ROM copies of Half-Life and all of its expansions (except Counter-Strike) which I bought of eBay. No! I go out of my way to buy older systems and the actual disc/cartridge to play them on. Okay so, first off, I am a fan of retro gaming, and I am most of the time not content to simply play re-releases of retro games.
